Susan teaches literature and writing in the English Department, as well as classes specifically focused on students in the Honors Program. She regularly teaches courses in the Writing Program, including Introduction to Academic Writing and Research Writing in a Persuasive Mode. She also teaches American Culture, a course which examines the civil rights and social justice issues of the 1950s and 60s set against the backdrop of the Cold War through pop culture, film, art, music, and material culture. Additionally, Susan teaches Multicultural American Literature, a course focusing on the literature of traditionally marginalized populations. As the Associate Director of the USU Writing Center, she teaches the tutoring seminar, and trains and mentors both graduate and undergraduate tutors. Susan also teaches Writing in a Persuasive Mode, Connections, and a professionalization class for the Honors Program.
Susan's diverse interests include writing center work, where she actively participates in conferences of the International Writing Center Association, presenting on issues such as assessment, growing a writing center, and reader vs. audience. Of particular interest is research work with both undergraduate and graduate students in the writing center. Other research interests include the beloved American author, Willa Cather, as well as multicultural American lit authors, including Maxine Hong Kingston and Sherman Alexie. Susan is a contributor to the USU Writing Program, where she has worked as an Assistant Director and a Voices Program Director, where she served as co-editor of several volumes of an anthology of student essays.
