CATCHING UP WITH 2005 ALUMNUS JEREMY WOOD
Spending a significant portion of my youth under the eclipse of the Wellsville Mountains made the decision to attend Utah State University easy. I attended Utah State because of my desire for higher learning and convenient trout streams; and not the schools outstanding football record. I spent one year pursuing an undergraduate degree in Finance until I realized I was suffering from a chronic anxiety known as boredom. Even with the practical necessity of accounting, economics and finance, enjoying my education overwhelmed my desire for any specific degree. After investigating Utah State's different colleges and departments, and the unfortunate discovery that I could not major in river guiding, I reflected on the classes I had attended in an attempt to realize my fate. In hindsight, Marina Hall's Introduction to Literature class was a personal favorite and a contributing factor for me majoring in English. Coming from a family of academics I was thrilled to tell my father about the decision to major in English, until his agonizing response, “What can you do with an English degree? If you want to make money in life you need to stick with Finance.” Although the fear of fiscal failure was tattooed on my brain, I was determined to prove him wrong, and I happily pursued my educational aspiration for subjectivity, creativity, philosophy, and enlightenment from history's intellectuals.
