Monday, March 30, 2009 USU LITERARY STUDIES UNDERGRADS CLAWSON AND OLSEN PRESENT AT INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION
 Utah State University English majors Cory (C. D) Clawson and Trent Olsen attended the Sigma Tau Delta 2009 International Convention in Minneapolis, Minnesota, March 25-28, 2009. The annual event brings students from Europe, the US and the Caribbean together to share their critical and creative work. A record-breaking number of students attended this year's conference. Authors Alexandra Fuller ( The Legend of Cody H. Bryant), Neil Gaimon ( Stardust), and Mike Perry ( Population: 458) spoke at the conference.

Monday, March 30, 2009 USU DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH SPEAKERS SERIES PRESENTS FIFE FOLKLORE HONOR LECTURER POLLY STEWART AND "URBAN PIONEERS: UTAH'S HOMEGROWN FOLK MUSIC REVIVAL OF THE 1960S"
 Folklorist Polly Stewart will present the 28 th annual Fife Folklore Honor Lecture, a part of Utah State University's department of English Speakers Series, at 12:00 noon Thursday, Apr. 9. The presentation, “Urban Pioneers: The Folk-Music Revival in Utah, 1959-1966,” will take place in the USU Haight Alumni Center. The event is free, and all are welcome. The Fife Honor Lecture is named in memory of Utah State University folklorists Austin and Alta Fife. The Fifes were some of the first scholars to be interested in Utah's traditional and vernacular culture. Each year, a nationally renowned scholar presents a lecture in their honor. The Fife Honor Lecture has been a USU tradition for 28 years. More

Research Week 2009 - Utah State University's Vice President for Research Office will host its fifth-annual Research Week March 30-April 2. Research Week will feature four days of events—each day highlighting one aspect of university research—for faculty, staff and students. Click Here For More >>. Research Week Workshops - During the week of March 30 to April 2, the Vice President for Research Office will be hosting its annual Research Week. This year, workshops will be held to provide information for interested faculty and students about Sponsored Programs, new faculty seed grants, and research for graduate students. All workshops will be held in the Eccles Conference Center on Tuesday, March 31, 2009.

Sunday, March 29, 2009 ENGLISH ALUM AND DONOR CECELIA HARRISON FOXLEY TO SPEAK AT USU
 Cecelia Harrison Foxley, a generous and dedicated friend of USU's department of English, will be the College of HASS Distinguished Alumni speaker on April 8. The event will take place at the USU Haight Alumni Center from 11:30-12:30. Foxley created and continues to contribute to an endowment in the USU department of English that provides scholarship support for students intending to teach high school English. More

The Utah State University College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences will hold its annual awards ceremony Friday, April 3, in the Morgan Theatre. All are invited to attend. Honorees from USU's department of English include Outstanding Students Brittny Goodsell Jones and Trent Olsen, Writing Center Director Star Coulbrooke, Financial Officer Annie Nielson, and Department Head Jeff Smitten. Saturday, March 28, 2009 SOWDER TO BE FEATURED AUTHOR AT NULC
 Poet and Associate Professor Michael Sowder will participate as a featured author at the 24tht National Undergraduate Literature Conference on the Weber State University Campus, April 2-4, 2009. The conference, unique in the country, hosts more than two hundred undergraduate students from every corner of the nation, including Hawaii. Sowder will present a poetry reading, give a talk on writing poetry, and participate in a Question and Answer session for students. Past participants have included such luminaries as John Barth, Ray Bradbury, E.L. Doctorow, Richard Ford, Jamaica Kincaid, Norman Mailer, Tim O'Brien, and Tobias Wolff. Saturday, March 28, 2009 NORMAN MAILER STUDENT WRITING COMPETITION ANNOUNCED
 The Norman Mailer Writers Colony and the National Council of Teachers of English are pleased to invite submissions for the first annual Norman Mailer High School and College Writing Awards. Cash prizes of up to $10,000 will be awarded to National Winners . Prizes will also be awarded to runners-up, honorable mention writers, and those writers whose work earns top scores in early evaluation rounds. Saturday, March 28, 2009 BRITTNY GOODSELL JONES AND TRENT OLSEN NAMED OUTSTANDING STUDENTS
 The department of English at Utah State has named two outstanding students. Brittny Goodsell Jones was named American Studies Outstanding Student, and Trent Olsen was named English Oustanding Student.They will be recognized on at the HASS Awards Ceremony at 3:00 pm April 3 in the Morgan Theatre. Goodsell Jones was also named Outstanding Student for Journalism and Communications. Please join us in congratulating these students for their fine work. More

Monday, March 23, 2009 USU ENGLISH MAJOR NATALIE HATCH RECEIVES URCO GRANT
 Associate Vice President for Research Joyce Kinkead and the faculty review panel are pleased to announce that Utah State University English major Natalie Hatch has earned an Undergraduate Research and Creative Opportunities grant. Her proposal, “May Swenson's Verbal Artistry: The Power of Her Northern Poetry,” was judged on criteria that included thoroughness and clarity of the project description and the investigator's background and interest in the topic. The URCO grants were initiated at USU in 1975. USU professor of English Paul Crumbley, Hatch's faculty mentor for the project, has worked with her since the beginning of the academic year. “Natalie has taken more initiative and become increasingly engaged,” said Crumbley. “I'm impressed with her ability to interpret Swenson's writings.” Crumbley jokes that “I told her about May Swenson, and now she is telling me.” More

Monday, March 23, 2009 ENGLISH UNDERGRAD TRENT OLSEN TO BE HONORED DURING RESEARCH WEEK
 Trent Olsen, who won the HASS “Undergraduate Researcher of the Year” award, will be honored during USU's Research Week, March 30-April 20. Olsen is a Departmental Honors student in English, with minors in both Business and Sociology, and a Rhetoric Associate (R.A.) assigned to both the English and Sociology departments. Mentor Cooper-Rompato, says that “he has distinguished himself not only as a student -he has a 4.0 in English classes and a 3.8 overall-but also professionally. As an undergraduate he has already accomplished more than many English graduate students can claim.” Rompato anticipates that “ based on the strength of his writing sample, professional experience, and overall merit, Trent will be accepted by a number of high-ranking doctoral programs. Monday, March 23, 2009 POET ALICIA OSTRIKER TO VISIT USU
 Poet Alicia Ostriker will visit Utah State University Thursday, April 2, 2009, for two public events. At noon in Merrill-Cazier Library 101 she will participate in a panel discussion. At 7:00 pm in the Haight Alumni Center she will read from her work. Both events are free, and all are invited. Ostriker is the 2009 May Swenson Visiting Poet, and her presentations are part of the department of English Speakers Series, a part of the Caine School of the Arts. More
