Teaching
Professor Shively teaches courses in English Education and American Literature. Recent courses have included Teaching Writing, Teaching Literature, Multicultural American Literature, and the Harlem Renaissance.
Research
Steve Shively is co-editor of Teaching Cather and a book-length collection of essays titled Teaching the Works of Willa Cather (Greentower Press, 2008). He has published several essays on Willa Cather and other writers of the Great Plains. These essays appear in Willa Cather: New Facts, New Glimpses, Revisions (Fairleigh Dickinson UP, 2008), Folklore in the Making: B.A. Botkin and American Culture (U of Oklahoma P, 2008), Willa Cather's My Ántonia: Modern Critical Interpretations (Chelsea House, 2008), and various journals. Among his other research interests are pedagogy of place, young adult literature, authorial identity and cultural representation, Internet-based curriculum development, and religion in literature.
Professional Activities
Steve Shively serves on the Board of Governors of the Willa Cather Foundation, where he is heavily involved in planning and conducting conferences, seminars, and related educational activities. He is an active member of the Western Literature Association and the National Council of Teachers of English. He regularly serves as a consultant and presenter on literature and writing for public school programs.
