Undergraduate Research
Program Overview
USU’s Department of English has always been supportive of its student researchers, scholars, and writers. Under the mentorship of top faculty and scholars, our students have presented their research in prestigious national and regional undergraduate forums including:
- Research on Capitol Hill
- Utah Conference on Undergraduate Research
-
National Conference on Undergraduate Research
-
Sigma Tau Delta Regional Conference
-
The National Conference on Peer Tutoring and Writing
-
National Undergraduate Literature Conference
Students also have several occasions to present their research to members of the department and USU community by participating in other research events such as Student Showcase, held annually in conjunction with Research Week events sponsored by the Vice President for Research Office.
Among top research students currently in the English department, we boast several Undergraduate Research Fellows, an Undergraduate Researcher of the Year for the College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences, and several Undergraduate Research and Creative Opportunity (URCO) Grant recipients.
Undergraduate Researchers in English have studied British poetry, nineteenth century literature, and Daisy Miller; USU alumnus and poet, May Swenson; fifteenth century religious texts; Ian McEwan’s use of memory and wartime in Atonement; and former Poet Laureate of the United States, Elizabeth Bishop’s Brazilian influences. Through this student-centered program, students can select and personalize their research to best fit their educational and career goals. Undergraduate Researchers in English have been accepted at top graduate schools throughout the country.
