Bennion Teachers' Workshop 2017

Jessica Rivera-Mueller and Susan Andersen are co-directors of the Bennion Teachers' Workshop, an annual summer workshop sponsored by the USU Mountain West Center for Regional Studies. The workshop focuses on the theme, "Literature of Protest: Civil Rights, Democracy, and Social Justice." Through study of past and present social movements, participants will consider the role of literature in civic engagement and explore the ethical dimensions of bringing these often-sensitive issues into the classroom.

Guest lecturers include Margaret Whitt, Professor Emeritus at University of Denver; USU faculty: Ben Gunsberg, Joyce Kinkead, Jason Gilmore, and Randy Williams; and USU English Department alum and poet, Darren Edwards. The local musical group, Old Folk, will provide entertainment.

The workshop is designed to assist educators at the secondary and post-secondary level who teach in the humanities and social sciences (CEU course options are available). Graduate students or upper division undergraduates in related subjects are also welcome to register (TEAL 5560, ENGL 6890, CHSS 5250). Scholarships are available. Please see the brochure for more information.
