Dr. Wells is Professor of Literature and Culture at Ritsumeikan University in Kyoto, Japan. She has published major books and articles on American work songs from the 19th and early 20th centuries, African-American oral traditions, werewolf/she-wolf legends and violence, Japanese-American Buddhist songs, Japanese ballad traditions, and Japanese nursery rhymes as nursemaids’ work songs.
